Ingredient Notes, Substitutions & Additions

Brussels sprouts: If you make this dish around the holidays, many stores will sell pre-shaved brussels sprouts. If not, it’s easy to “shave” or slice them yourself. Here’s a quick tutorial.

Maple Syrup: This just adds the tiniest bit of sweetness to balance out the flavors. You can also use honey.

Red onion: I love the flavor of the red onion with the sprouts! If you want a less sharp taste, soak the onion slices in cold water for a few minutes before adding them to the salad.

Pomegranate seeds, bacon, and raisins all make delicious additions to this salad!

  • Make-ahead tip: For the freshest results, prepare this salad shortly before serving. OR make keep the dressing and sprouts/onion separate and toss right before serving.
  • Red onion: Soak the red onion slices in a little cold water before adding them to the salad if you want milder taste.
  • Shaved Parmesan: If you like, use a vegetable peeler and shave nice, big pieces of Parmesan cheese over the top when serving.
