Recipe Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make this homemade ham salad:

  • Cooked, leftover ham or deli ham (lunchmeat)
  • Eggs (boiled)
  • Mayonnaise
  • Celery
  • Red onion
  • Yellow mustard
  • Black pepper

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Ham: This recipe hits the spot if you have leftover Easter or Christmas ham. But sometimes I crave this ham salad in the ham off-season! 🙂 If that’s the case, it works just as well to use deli ham or lunchmeat. I like buying deli ham from the counter as in generally contains less water.

Eggs: Hard-boiled eggs add some protein and I love them in this recipe. If you’re in hurry or don’t want them, feel free to leave them out.

Expert Tips

  • Ways to enjoy: This ham salad is great as a little snack with crackers. You can also pile it onto sliced bread, add a little lettuce and it’s the BEST ham sandwich you’l ever eat! Last, if you’re low carbin’ it, wrap the ham salad in lettuce for a ham and lettuce wrap.
  • Deli ham: If you want to make this recipe with sliced ham, try to get ham from the deli counter as it has less water in it. If you get pre packaged ham, just make sure you pat the slices “dry” with paper towels so there isn’t any excess moisture to make your ham salad soggy.
  • Food processor: If you want that “old-fashioned” or deviled ham texture, the food processor is the way to go. If you’re not that concerned, then you can just finely chop the ham.
  • Color: If you are serving this as an appetizer for a party, garnish it with a little chopped fresh parsley for a pop of color and freshness.

Total Time 20 minutes

Cuisine American
Servings 6

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. cooked ham leftover ham, or sliced deli ham
  • 4 large hardboiled eggs, chopped
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 4 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tsp yellow mustard
  • fresh black pepper

Instructions

  • Prep: Boil your eggs. See Note 1 below for my favorite methods for boiling eggs. When cool, finely chop.
  • Chop ham: Place ham in a food processor and pulse 7-10 times until ham is finely chopped (don't blend too much or the ham will become mushy). See photo in the post above for how the ham should look texture-wise!
  • Mix: In a large mixing bowl, add ham and all remaining ingredients. Stir until everything is well mixed.
  • Store or enjoy: Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Notes

Note 1: Here are my two favorite methods for hard boiling eggs:
  1. Add eggs to a medium saucepan, then cover eggs with water. Bring water to a rolling boil, then turn off the heat and cover the pan. Let the pan/eggs sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse eggs under cold water and peel.
  2. In the Instant Pot! I use this method: Easy Peel Eggs
